Have you ever bought a beautiful hat, only to hide it away in the cupboard because you weren’t sure where else to keep it?

This handmade macramé hat hanger turns your favourite hat into part of your home décor. It is practical, affordable and wonderfully relaxing to make. You don’t need an entire craft room or years of macramé experience either a comfortable chair, a secure hook and a little patience are enough to get started.

The full step-by-step instructions and printable materials list are available in the Patterns section:

Why I Love This Project

There is something special about creating a useful item with your own hands. This isn’t simply another decoration to place on a shelf. It gives your favourite hat a proper home while adding warmth and texture to an empty wall.

The natural cotton cord, wooden ring and wooden bead create that lovely relaxed boho look without making the room feel overly decorated. You can use neutral ivory cord or choose a colour that suits your personality and home.

Would you keep yours neutral, or would you try a beautiful terracotta, sage green or dusty rose?

Is This Pattern Suitable for Beginners?

This pattern is best for a confident beginner. You don’t need to know dozens of complicated knots, but it will help if you are willing to practise the following:

  • Lark’s head knots

  • Square knots

  • Switch square knots

  • Diagonal double half-hitch knots

The pattern includes detailed step-by-step photographs, so you can compare your work as you go.

Please don’t become discouraged if your first few knots are not perfectly even. Mine aren’t always perfect either! Macramé is surprisingly forgiving, and small variations are part of what gives a handmade piece its character.

Which macramé knot do you find the most difficult?

What You Will Need

You only need a few basic supplies:

  • Natural cotton macramé cord

  • A wooden ring

  • One large-hole wooden bead

  • Sharp scissors

  • A measuring tape

  • A comb or pet slicker brush

  • Fabric stiffening spray, if desired

Before buying anything, check what you already have at home. A clean pet slicker brush works beautifully for separating and softening macramé fringe.

The full cord measurements and complete supply quantities are included with the pattern.

Choose the Right Hat

This hanger works beautifully with:

  • Wide-brim felt hats

  • Sun hats

  • Fedora-style hats

  • Lightweight cowboy hats

  • Decorative straw hats

Use the hat you plan to display while making the straps. Testing the fit before joining the two sides will help prevent the finished holder from being too loose or too tight.

Which hat would you display first?

Take Your Time with the Top Diamond

The beaded diamond is the decorative centrepiece of this project. This is the section where you should slow down and regularly check your tension.

If one side appears shorter than the other, gently loosen the most recent knots and adjust them before continuing. Trying to force an uneven diamond into shape later can cause the entire piece to pucker.

Stand back from your work occasionally. It is much easier to notice uneven lines when you look at the project from a short distance.

Would you use a natural wooden bead, paint it or replace it with something colourful?

Creating the Two Hat Straps

The cords are divided into two groups after the top diamond is completed. Spaced square knots create flexible open straps that curve naturally around the hat.

Try to keep the gaps between the knots consistent on both sides. They don’t need to be measured down to the last millimetre, but the two straps should look balanced when placed next to one another.

Remember to test the hat before completing the lower section. A deeper cowboy hat may need slightly longer straps, while a smaller felt hat may need the knots placed closer together.

Would you make a single hanger or a longer version that holds two hats?

Finishing the Lower Diamond

The two straps are brought together underneath the hat and joined to create the lower decorative section.

This second diamond helps support the hat and gives the hanger a beautiful finished shape. Keep the centre knot straight and work outward gradually.

Don’t pull the diagonal rows too tightly. A little natural space within the diamond prevents the cotton cords from bunching and keeps the pattern lying flat.

The Secret to Beautiful Fringe

The fringe can completely change the final appearance of your project.

Begin by trimming the loose cords to a manageable length. Brush the fibres gently, starting at the ends and working upward. Trying to brush from the top immediately can create unnecessary tangles.

Once the fibres are smooth, make your final shaping cut. You can create a soft point, an inverted V or a straight edge.

A light mist of fabric stiffening spray can help the fringe hold its shape, but test it on a leftover piece of cord first.

Which fringe shape do you prefer straight, pointed or softly curved?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Pulling Every Knot Too Tightly

Firm knots are important, but very tight knots can make the diamonds pucker or twist.

Forgetting to Compare Both Sides

Check the two straps after every few knots. It is much easier to correct the length while you are still working.

Cutting the Fringe Too Soon

Always brush the fringe before making the final cut. The fibres will spread and change length once they are combed.

Not Testing the Hat

Different hats have different crown depths and brim sizes. Test the fit before permanently joining the straps.

Expecting Handmade Work to Look Machine-Made

A handmade project is allowed to have small imperfections. Those little differences are proof that you made it yourself.

Make It Your Own

Once you understand the basic pattern, you can personalise it in so many ways.

Try:

  • Coloured cotton cord

  • Painted or stained wooden beads

  • Several small beads instead of one large bead

  • A longer or fuller fringe

  • Decorative beads added to the fringe

  • A longer double-hat version

  • A shorter design for a child’s sun hat

You could also make one as a thoughtful handmade gift for someone who loves hats or boho décor.

Who would you make one for?

This Week’s Little Challenge

Choose one hat in your cupboard that deserves to be displayed.

Gather the basic materials, save the pattern and complete just the wooden-ring and top-diamond section. You don’t have to finish the entire hanger in one sitting. Small, relaxed crafting sessions are often much more enjoyable.

A Final Thought

Your home doesn’t need to be filled with expensive decorations to feel beautiful and personal. Sometimes one simple handmade piece can transform an empty corner and remind you that useful things can also be lovely.

Take your time, enjoy learning the knots and don’t compare your first attempt to somebody else’s tenth. Your macramé hanger will be special because you made it.
