There is something lovely about wearing an apron you made yourself. This simple adult apron is perfect for baking, cooking, gardening or crafting, and it also makes a thoughtful handmade gift. The project is suitable for beginners and uses mostly straight stitching, with gently curved armhole edges. You can use your overlocker to create neat, durable finishes, while your sewing machine handles the hems, straps and pocket. Choose a pretty cotton print for a cheerful kitchen apron, neutral linen for a cottage-style look, or cotton drill for something strong enough to use in the garden or craft room.

  • Safety pin or loop turner
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Printer

Fabric

1 metre of medium-weight woven cotton, linen, cotton-linen blend or cotton drill, approximately 140–150 cm wide. Pre-wash and press the fabric before cutting.

Cutting instructions

Download and print the A4 pattern at 100% or “Actual Size.” Do not select “Fit to Page.” Measure the test square—it must be exactly 5 × 5 cm. Tape the eight apron-body pages together according to the assembly map. Fold the fabric lengthwise with the right sides together. Place the straight edge marked “PLACE ON FOLD” directly against the fabric fold and cut one apron body. Also cut: 1 neck strap measuring 60 × 8 cm 2 waist ties measuring 75 × 8 cm each 1 pocket measuring 30 × 22 cm Do not cut along the folded edge of the apron body.

Sewing instructions

  1. 01

Prepare the fabric Wash, dry and press the fabric before cutting. This prevents the finished apron from shrinking during its first wash.

  2. 02

Print and assemble the pattern Print the pattern on A4 paper at 100% or “Actual Size.” Check that the test square measures exactly 5 × 5 cm. Arrange the eight body pages in two columns and four rows, match the registration marks and tape the pages together.

  3. 03

Cut the apron pieces Fold the fabric lengthwise with the right sides together. Place the pattern’s straight fold line against the fabric fold. Pin or clip the pattern in position and cut one apron body. Cut the neck strap, two waist ties and pocket according to the measurements provided.

  4. 04

Finish the apron body edges Overlock around the outside edges of the apron body, including the curved armholes. Trim only a very small amount of fabric while overlocking. Do not overlock across the folded centre because the body has already been opened into one complete piece.

  5. 05

Sew the side hems Fold both straight side edges towards the wrong side by 1.5 cm. Press and pin them in place. Sew close to the overlocked edge using a straight stitch.

  6. 06

Sew the bottom hem Fold the bottom edge towards the wrong side by 1.5 cm. Press and pin it. Fold the bottom corners neatly and stitch across the hem using a straight stitch.

  7. 07

Finish the curved armholes Fold each overlocked curved edge towards the wrong side by approximately 1 cm. Press carefully, pin or clip it in place and slowly topstitch around the curve. Reduce your sewing speed to help keep the curve smooth.

  8. 08

Make the neck strap Fold the neck-strap piece in half lengthwise with the right sides together. Sew along the long edge using a 1 cm seam allowance. Sew one short end closed but leave the other end open. Turn it right side out, press it flat and topstitch close to both long edges.

  9. 09

Make the waist ties Repeat the same process for both waist ties. Fold each tie lengthwise with the right sides together. Sew along the long edge and close one short end. Turn the ties right side out, press them flat and topstitch along both long edges.

  10. 10

Attach the neck strap Pin one end of the neck strap to each upper corner of the apron bib. Make sure the strap is not twisted. Fold each raw end underneath by approximately 1 cm. Sew each end securely with a square and an X through the centre.

  11. 11

Attach the waist ties Place one waist tie at each side of the apron, directly below the curved armhole. Fold the raw end underneath by approximately 1 cm. Sew each tie securely using a square with an X through the centre.

  12. 12

Prepare the pocket Overlock around the pocket. Fold the top edge towards the wrong side by 2 cm, press it and stitch across the top. Fold the two sides and bottom edge towards the wrong side by 1 cm and press them flat.

  13. 13

Position the pocket Centre the pocket on the front of the apron, approximately 20–25 cm below the waist area. Check that it is straight, then pin or clip it in place.

  14. 14

Sew on the pocket Topstitch down one side, across the bottom and up the opposite side. Leave the top open. Reinforce the stitching at both upper corners. For two pocket sections, sew one straight vertical line down the centre.

  15. 15

Finish the apron Trim all loose threads and press the completed apron. Check that the neck strap and waist ties are firmly attached. Try it on and make any final adjustments.

Tips and notes

Use woven fabric without stretch for the easiest result. Pre-wash the fabric before cutting. Press after every sewing stage for a neat finish. Test the overlocker tension on a fabric scrap first. Do not cut away too much fabric while overlocking. Use a longer stitch length of approximately 3 mm for visible topstitching. A contrasting pocket or straps can make the apron more interesting. Lengthen or shorten the apron at the bottom if needed. For an adjustable neck strap, cut it 75 cm long and add a D-ring or slider. Add a fabric loop to the side for hanging a tea towel.

Safety

Keep your fingers away from the sewing-machine needle and overlocker blade. Switch the machines off before changing needles, rethreading or cleaning them. Never pull fabric through the machine—allow the feed dogs to move it naturally. Keep pins away from the overlocker blade and remove them before they reach the presser foot. Place the hot iron safely upright when it is not being used.
