Chocolate Cake in the Air Fryer Oven
This is a simple, moist chocolate cake made in an air fryer oven. The batter is meant to be quite thin, and the hot water helps give the cake its soft texture. Add a little instant coffee to the water if you’d like to bring out the chocolate flavour.

Ingredients
- 180 g brown sugar
- 109 g all-purpose flour
- 60 g unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¾ tsp baking powder
- ¾ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup hot water
- Instant coffee powder, optional
Method
- 1
Preheat the air fryer oven to 180°C for 5 minutes using the bake setting, if available.
- 2
In a large bowl, stir together the brown sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- 3
Add the egg, milk, vegetable oil and vanilla extract. Stir gently until combined.
- 4
Stir in the hot water. Add a little instant coffee powder to the water first, if you like. The batter will be thin; this is normal.
- 5
Pour the batter into a baking pan. Cover the pan with foil and poke a few holes in the foil.
- 6
Place the pan in the air fryer oven. Set it to 160°C and bake for 35 minutes.
- 7
Carefully remove the foil and bake for about 10 minutes more, until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
- 8
Leave the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before removing it. It will be very moist and soft.
Notes & tips
The picture lists 109 g of flour. Please check that amount against the original recipe before posting, as it may be a typo. Use a pan that fits your air fryer oven, and check that it is suitable for the appliance. If your air fryer oven doesn’t have a bake setting, use its usual baking function. The cake is delicate while warm, so let it cool before removing it from the pan.
