Fresh Homemade Lemonade

Ingredients

  • 250 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice, seeds removed
  • 150 g white sugar
  • 250 ml water, for the sugar syrup
  • 750 ml cold water
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh mint leaves, optional
  • Lemon slices for serving, optional

Method

  1. 1

Juice the lemons: Cut the peeled lemons in half and squeeze out the juice. Strain it to remove the seeds and excess pulp.

  2. 2

Prepare the sugar syrup: Place the sugar and 250 ml water in a small saucepan. Warm gently while stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Do not boil for a long time.

  3. 3

Cool the syrup: Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the sugar syrup to cool completely.

  4. 4

Combine the lemonade: Pour the lemon juice, cooled sugar syrup and 750 ml cold water into a large jug. Stir well.

  5. 5

Taste and adjust: Taste the lemonade. Add more cold water if it is too strong, or a little more sugar syrup if it is too tart.

  6. 6

Chill and serve: Refrigerate until cold. Serve over ice with fresh mint and lemon slices, if available.

Tips

Juice the peeled lemons as soon as possible because they can dry out without their protective yellow skin. Begin with 150 g sugar and add more only if needed. For sparkling lemonade, replace some of the cold water with chilled soda water just before serving.
