Have you ever imagined getting a flat tire while you're alone?
Maybe it's after work. Maybe it's raining. Maybe it's on a quiet road and your heart immediately starts racing.
If that thought makes you nervous, you're definitely not alone.
The truth is, most of us were never taught how to change a tire. We learned how to style an outfit, cook a meal, balance a budget, or care for our families, but changing a tire somehow became "someone else's job."
Today, we're changing that.
Because confidence isn't about knowing everything.
It's about knowing you can figure things out.
Let's walk through it together.
Step 1: Stay Calm and Stay Safe
Before you even think about changing the tire, your safety comes first.
If your tire goes flat while driving:
• Stay calm.
• Slow down gradually.
• Don't slam on the brakes.
• Turn on your hazard lights.
• Pull over somewhere safe and as flat as possible.
• Put the car in Park.
• Apply the handbrake.
If the road feels dangerous, it's completely okay to call roadside assistance instead.
Knowing when not to change a tire is just as important.
Big Sister Tip:
There is absolutely no shame in asking for help if the location isn't safe.
Step 2: Find Your Tools
Open your boot and locate:
• Your spare tire
• The jack
• The wheel spanner or lug wrench
If you've never checked whether they're there...
Today is the perfect day.
You don't want the first time you look for them to be on the side of the road.
Question for you:
Have you ever checked if your spare tire is properly inflated?
Step 3: Loosen the Wheel Nuts
Before lifting the car, use the wheel spanner to loosen each wheel nut slightly.
Don't remove them completely.
Just loosen them enough that they'll come off easily once the car has been lifted.
Remember:
Left to loosen. Right to tighten.
It sounds simple, but that little reminder has saved plenty of people from unnecessary frustration.
Step 4: Lift the Car and Change the Tire
Position the jack at the correct lifting point shown in your vehicle's manual.
Slowly raise the vehicle until the flat tire is just off the ground.
Now:
• Remove the loosened wheel nuts.
• Take off the flat tire.
• Place the spare tire onto the wheel hub.
• Tighten the wheel nuts by hand.
Take your time.
Nobody is timing you.
Being careful is far more important than being fast.
Step 5: Lower the Car
Slowly lower the vehicle back onto the ground.
Now tighten the wheel nuts firmly using the wheel spanner.
It's best to tighten them in a star pattern if your wheel has five nuts. This helps the wheel sit evenly.
Finally:
• Pack away your tools.
• Check your spare tire if possible.
• Drive carefully.
Remember that most space saver spare tires are designed for temporary use only, so head to a tire repair shop as soon as you can.
Big Sister Note ❤️
Learning to change a tire isn't really about cars.
It's about independence.
It's about knowing that if life throws you a challenge, you have the ability to stay calm, think clearly, and solve the problem one step at a time.
You may never need this skill.
But if the day comes, you'll be so glad you took a few minutes to learn it.
