Have You Bought a Gua Sha Stone... But It's Sitting in a Drawer?

Let's be honest...

So many of us have seen beautiful gua sha videos on Pinterest or TikTok and thought,

"That looks relaxing I should try it!"

Then the stone arrives...

You use it once.

You're not quite sure if you're doing it correctly.

And before long, it's sitting forgotten in a bathroom drawer.

If that sounds familiar, don't worry.

At ClosetMix Big Sister, we're all about making beauty and self-care simple not overwhelming.

Today, I'll show you an easy gua sha routine that takes just a few minutes and can become a calming part of your skincare routine.

What Is Gua Sha?

Gua sha is an ancient facial massage technique that uses a smooth stone often made from jade or rose quartz to gently glide across the skin.

When used correctly, it may help:

  • Reduce morning puffiness

  • Encourage lymphatic drainage

  • Relax tight facial muscles

  • Improve circulation

  • Leave your skin looking refreshed and glowing

It's important to know that gua sha doesn't permanently sculpt your face or erase wrinkles, despite what you may see on social media. The visible effects, like reduced puffiness, are usually temporary, and the practice is best thought of as a relaxing skincare ritual rather than a miracle treatment.

The best benefit?

It forces you to slow down for five minutes and take care of yourself.

Before You Start

Preparation makes all the difference.

Step 1: Cleanse Your Face

Always begin with clean skin.

Remove makeup, sunscreen, and any dirt from the day.

Step 2: Apply Facial Oil or Serum

Never use a gua sha stone on dry skin.

Your skin needs enough slip so the stone glides easily without pulling.

Some good options include:

  • Facial oil

  • Squalane oil

  • Lightweight facial serum

If the stone drags, simply add a little more product.

Step-by-Step Gua Sha Routine

1. Start at Your Neck

Always begin at the neck.

Using gentle pressure, glide the stone downward along each side of your neck five times.

This helps encourage lymphatic drainage.

2. Define the Jawline

Place the curved side of the stone against your chin.

Glide along your jaw toward your ear.

Repeat five strokes on each side.

Slow and gentle is the goal.

3. Massage Your Cheeks

Starting beside your nose, glide outward toward your ear.

Repeat five gentle strokes.

Avoid pressing too hard.

4. Under the Eyes

Use the lightest pressure here.

Glide from beneath the eye toward your temple.

The skin around your eyes is delicate.

Three slow strokes are enough.

5. Brows and Temples

Start at the inner eyebrow.

Glide outward toward the temple.

This feels especially relaxing after a long day at work.

6. Forehead

Begin in the centre of your forehead.

Glide outward toward your temples.

Then glide upward toward your hairline.

Repeat several times.

7. Finish at the Neck

Finish exactly where you started.

Glide gently down the neck again.

This completes the massage and supports drainage.

How Often Should You Use Gua Sha?

You don't need to do it every day.

For most people:

  • 3 to 4 times a week is plenty.

  • Morning sessions can help reduce puffiness.

  • Evening sessions are great for relaxing before bed.

Choose the time that fits your routine best.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these common mistakes to keep your skin comfortable and safe.

❌ Using the stone on dry skin

❌ Pressing too hard

❌ Rushing through the routine

❌ Using it over active acne, cuts, sunburn, or irritated skin

❌ Forgetting to clean the stone after each use

A little care goes a long way.

Big Sister Tips

✔ Hold the stone at about a 15–45° angle against your skin.

✔ Let the weight of the stone do most of the work.

✔ Your skin may look slightly pink afterwards that's normal. It shouldn't hurt or leave bruises.

✔ Wash your gua sha stone with warm water and a gentle soap after each use.

✔ Consistency is more important than pressure.

Big Sister Reminder

Self-care doesn't have to be expensive or complicated.

Whether you're spending five minutes using a gua sha stone, applying moisturiser, or simply taking a few deep breaths, those small moments matter.

Your skincare routine isn't just about your skin it's about making time for yourself.

And you deserve that.
